LAYTON Friday night's battle in Region 1 between Fremont and Layton featured two teams on a roll. Layton enter-ed the game having scored 81 points in its previous two outings, while Fremont posted a 3-1 record with its only loss to No. 1 Bingham.
At the end of Friday night's game, it was the Silver Wolves who picked up the victory, 16-3, to improve to 2-0 in Region 1 play. Layton saw its offense fizzle, committing three turnovers in the red zone.
"Those turnovers were real big, plus we held them to just three points," Fremont head coach Blaine Monkres said. "Our offense wasn't that great, and Layton played good defensively." Fremont's offense did outplay Layton, accounting for 347 yards of total offense to the Lancers' 244. But it was the turnovers that lost the game for Layton.
"We didn't show offensive consistency tonight like we had in our prior two games," Layton head coach Jim Batchelor said. "When you don't come away with points in the red zone, it will hurt you."
The Silver Wolves scored the first touchdown of the game after Greydn Morin hit Austin Raught on a deep ball down the middle for 66 yards. Kevin Squires added the kick to give Fremont the early 7-0 lead. Layton countered with a 32-yard field goal by Nick O'Neal on the next drive.
In the second quarter, Morin passed for his second touchdown of the game after finding Jade Hadley for seven yards. Kevin Squires was good on the kick again to put Fremont up 14-3 at the half.
In the second half, neither team could find the end zone. Layton quarterback Kyle Bubak, who had thrown his first interception on the Fremont four-yard line in the first half, tossed his second pick of the game in the third quarter. This time the turnover came at the Fremont 20. The Silver Wolves took the ball and put together a nice drive before a Morin pass was picked off by Matt Putnam.
But, it was a game of hot potato as Layton quarterback Kyle Bubak's struggles continued when he fumbled the snap at the Fremont 10-yard line. The fumble came after Layton had just converted a key fourth down by a nose.
Fremont finished the scoring with a safety pinning Layton behind its own 10 and then getting the safety after Jenkins grabbed a hold of Bubak.
