The number of Utahns filing for bankruptcy protection in August fell to 1,766, compared to 1,807 during the same month in 2004, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah.

Filings through the first eight months of 2005 have decreased 4 percent compared with the same eight-month period a year ago.

About three-fourths of filings in August were made under Chapter 7, a provision that erases unsecured debts and liquidates assets.
