I want a tax cut and I want it now. The state of Utah has a budget surplus every year, and it's usually a record surplus. The Deseret Morning News spelled it out with a Sept. 9 headline that announced a record surplus for fiscal year 2005 of $170.4 million. Last year's surplus was a paltry $93 million. The year 2000 saw a then-record surplus of $110 million. This is, of course, great news. But it means we are overtaxed. Utah is one of the most heavily taxed states in the western United States and it's time for the Utah Legislature to give it back. Send $1,000 to every household in Utah and there will still be money left over. It's our money and we want it back.
