The Utah Education Association's Children At Risk Foundation is taking donations to bring school supplies and clothing to students evacuated to Camp Williams in Bluffdale.

Local presidents of the 18,000-member teachers union were e-mailed Friday and again Tuesday morning about the donation drive, said Jordan Education Association President Scott Berryessa, who is heading up the effort.

Copper Hills High School already has offered $1,200 from a Sub-for-Santa fund-raiser, and a former teacher is leading a group wanting to give school supplies.

"I'm sure there are all kinds of people willing to get involved and help," Berryessa said. "It's just a matter of coordinating."

Children are expected to receive backpacks with school supplies, from notebooks and pencils to backpacks and even games or cards for free time.

Berryessa is thinking of setting up a shopping spree for the displaced children and is talking with area entertainment centers and theaters about free movies and activities for families.

"Anything we can do to help these kids have their childhood," he said.

Monetary donations are accepted at UEA's Children At Risk Foundation, 5180 S. 875 East, Murray, UT 84107. Please write "Katrina" on your check.
