Japan Air, all Nippon cancel flights due to typhoon

Japan Airlines Corp. and All Nippon Airways Co., the nation's two largest carriers, canceled a combined 523 domestic and international flights as Typhoon Nabi lashed the Japanese island of Kyushu.

Japan Airlines and its regional operating units canceled a combined 368 domestic flights as of 9:15 a.m., Japan time, company spokeswoman Yumi Ishiwata said. Japan Air also called off 10 international flights to and from Fukuoka airport in southern island of Kyushu. All Nippon canceled 145 domestic flights as of 7 a.m., the airline said in a faxed statement.

The center of Nabi, the 14th named storm of the season, was near Makurazaki city in Kyushu Island as of 8:45 a.m., according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Nabi is moving toward north with the speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea's largest carrier, has canceled total four flights this morning to Fukuoka, the airline said on its Web site. Asiana Airlines canceled total 10 flights between South Korea and Japan.
