Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. has declared a state of emergency in Utah.

The state will allocate up to $5 million to assist with housing and other needs for evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, the governor said in a letter to President Bush. Huntsman anticipates all eligible costs incurred by state and local governments for this emergency will be funded 100 percent by the federal government.

The request for a presidential declaration needs to be signed by the president in order to take effect.
