Jordan Commons theater reopens as IMAX

SANDY — The Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons is getting bigger — again. The multiplex, 35 E. 9270 South, has reopened its Cricket Theatre as an official IMAX-licensed theater.

That means the theater is now eligible to play IMAX-only releases, such as the documentary short "The Magic of Flight," one of three films opening there today.

It also means the theater, part of Larry H. Miller's Jordan Commons complex, can play commercial films that have been digitally remastered or "converted" to a format for large-screen exhibition. Up first for the 450-seat Cricket IMAX Theatre are the bigger-screen versions of "Batman Begins" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

However, the theater will close again Sept. 12 while crews install a new 3-D format screen. According to marketing director Dave Bollard, when it reopens Sept. 23, the Cricket IMAX Theatre will screen "Magnificent Desolation — Walking on the Moon," a 3-D documentary short produced by Tom Hanks.

Bollard said the cost for the projection equipment alone is close to $1.5 million. Accordingly, the theater has raised ticket prices for its large-screen features. Tickets are now $10.50 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens, children and matinees. For documentaries, tickets will be $8.75, $6.25 for senior citizens, children or matinees before 6 p.m.
