Thirteen Utah elementary and middle-school students have been named semifinalists in the 2005 Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, which includes $100,000 in scholarships and prizes.
They are: Anthony Marcello Jr. , Westfield Elementary, Alpine; Colby Foote, Sego Lily Elementary, Alpine; Kayson Conlin, J.R. Smith Elementary, Wasatch; Brandon Bringhurst, Northridge Elementary, Alpine; Robert Reay, Timpanogos Academy, Alpine; John Foye, JE Cosgriff Memorial School; Alexander Uribe, Willow Creek Middle School, Alpine; Maurissa Weight, Rocky Mountain Middle, Wasatch; Luke Schunk, Wasatch Junior High, Granite; Phillip Sossenheimer, Morningside Elementary, Granite; Christina Woltz, Madeleine Choir School; Spencer Larson, Springville Junior High, Nebo; and Rachelle Baker, Midvale Middle, Jordan.
The students are among 400 selected from 75,000 students entering science fairs nationwide. In mid-September, the list will be pared to 40 finalists, who will travel to Washington, D.C., in October to compete for more than $100,000 worth of scholarships and prizes and the title of "America's Top Young Scientist of the Year."
