SLCC officials began working with Anderson earlier this year on the concept of an SLCC presence at the Unity Center. Since then, Huftalin said, the price per square foot on rent has come down, making a partnership "more possible."

"How do we financially make that happen?" Huftalin asked.

Deciding what programs will be the most helpful in that area is another lingering question. Intent, at least, is not wavering.

"The new president is very much interested in being there," Huftalin said.

Other negotiations have been better. Salt Lake County has agreed to run the fitness operations at the new community center, and Donated Dental Services has agreed to be a partner in the facility.

Despite ongoing concerns about money, the council gave the administration the go ahead to complete final engineering and architectural work on the center.
