One of the specific design elements Lindon wants to keep is the use of a white split-rail fence, giving some power behind their town slogan of "A Little Bit of Country." Although the rail is a keeper, other elements are still in question because the plan is still in the draft phases. Cowie said he expects more changes before it's approved, including architectural drawings and more specific design rules.

And CRSA is happy to oblige. The company has already helped more than a dozen Utah cities develop more aesthetic, uniform looks, including Sandy, South Salt Lake, West Valley City, Salt Lake City, Sugarhouse, Highland and Alpine.

The City Council is reviewing the plans and will coordinate with the planning commission in a joint work session on Tuesday. An additional review by the planning commission will be held before it goes before the City Council for approval.

"When you create a sense of identity and image, people find that's something very compelling," Simonsen said. "That's what we're trying to create, a positive environment — welcoming and inviting."
