According to a Deseret Morning News article, "County taxpayers may pay for races," (Aug. 16), the Salt Lake County Council will soon consider a proposed ordinance that would give aspiring candidates for county offices "a cut of the county's budget to run their campaigns."
According to Councilwoman Jenny Wilson, head of the ethics subcommittee, the Fair Elections Ordinance would amount to about $1 million each election year.
I find it ironic that the committee would dare use the term "fair" in the bill's title. I ask Ms. Wilson: How is it fair to take money from those who have earned it and give it to those who haven't, so they can run for office?
