OREM — Benefitting from senior leadership and gutsy performances, Timpanogos prevailed over Orem 2-0 at Timpanogos High on Tuesday afternoon.

In a game that was played very physically on both sides of the ball, the Timberwolves relied on their seniors for big plays and leadership against the youthful Tigers.

Leading the way for the T-Wolves was team captain Karley Nelson, who scored the opening goal in the 37th minute off a free kick, just arching the ball over the outstretched hand of Orem keeper Aly Tucker.

"Karley brings leadership to our team," Timpanogos coach Jeni Viernes said. "She keeps us organized, and helps out by calling out all the marks. We also have a lot of younger players out there, and she helps them out."

Timpanogos' second goal came in the 70th minute, as junior Jennifer Nielsen broke away from the Orem defense on the left sideline, and dribbled close to the goal before shooting the ball off of Tucker's fingertips into the net.

"Jen has been doing a really good job beating people up the line for us," Viernes said. "It's really good that she could get a little confidence, knowing that she can put those in when she wins the ball."

Both teams played tough, physical defense, and the T-Wolves were forced to work through the temporary absence of leading defender and team captain Megan Richardson.

"I was really impressed with Megan," Viernes said. "She came out with an ankle injury. She told me she could play, but I would rather that she plays with us the rest of the season."

Richardson was injured in a collision with a teammate early in the game and was forced out of the game. Defenders Shayla Adams and Stephanie Sorensen came up with big plays in Richardson's absence.

"The defense stepped up with Megan out," Viernes said. "Orem didn't really have any good opportunities for a goal in the second half."

Richardson's return in the second half helped the T-Wolves to fend off a renewed Orem attack. The Tigers strong defense, led by a number of saves by Tucker, helped them to get opportunities offensively. They were rewarded with a number of breakaways and free kicks but were unable to capitalize.

"We came out real slow in the second half, which made them look even stronger, Viernes said. "I told (the girls) at halftime that they had to want to win the ball away, or we'd be chasing Orem all game."
