Mendenhall said his squad showed the effort and knowledge of where to go this week but lacked the execution he hopes will come in two-a-days and pads.
"I would say we've advanced scheme and established fundamentals with a lot of work to be done on execution and consistency," Mendenhall said. "The re-establishment of exactly what we're doing, who is supposed to be where and the knowledge of the scheme is ahead of where we were in spring, along with expectations are what we got done this week. Other than that, I think we've got an early look at evaluating new players.
"We can see if the new guys have ability, even if they don't know all what they're doing, we can see who is willing. Who they truly are yet? We don't know."
Mendenhall said you can argue both ways on offense if it is better to be in full pads and hit or go with shells.
"Usually, it has been my experience, it is an advantage to the offense when you aren't in pads, because the defense, without full pads, is at a disadvantage. I've seen both. But it really doesn't matter.
