Major events for the Salt Lake City Police Department during Rick Dinse's tenure as chief.

2000

July 22: Charles F. "Rick" Dinse, a 34-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, is introduced as the new chief of the Salt Lake Police Department.

2002

February: The world descends on Utah and Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics. With the exception of a disturbance on the final night near the beer garden at the Gallivan Center, the Olympics go off without a hitch.

June 5: Elizabeth Smart is abducted from her Federal Heights home, sparking an intense search and investigation for nine months.

March 12: Elizabeth Smart is found walking along State Street in Sandy with Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee.

March 17: Mayor Rocky Anderson announces the formation of a five-member panel to review how Salt Lake City police handled the Smart investigation.

2003

May 6: The Salt Lake District Attorney's Office clears the Salt Lake City Police Department of leaking information about Elizabeth Smart's family to two Salt Lake Tribune reporters, who in turn sold the information to the National Enquirer.

2004

July 18: Lori Hacking is reported missing by her husband, Mark.

Oct. 1: The remains of Lori Hacking are found in the Salt Lake City landfill by police and volunteers. Mark Hacking pleaded guilty to his wife's murder and was sent to prison.

2005

Aug. 10: Dinse announces his plans to retire in early 2006 as chief of police.
