Defensive coordinator Gary Andersen calls it "an experiment in progress." Paul Soliai, who was a junior college all-American on the offensive line, is now learning to play nose guard. The Utes are hoping to capitalize on the 6-foot-4, 321-pound junior's athleticism up front.
In another move, junior college transfer Reggie Turner has been switched from linebacker to open end.

Quarterback Brett Ratliff, a transfer from Butte (Calif.) Junior College, has yet to practice with the Utes. Team officials are hopeful that his associate's degree will be posted Monday . . . Wide receiver Rob Gueck injured his left shoulder in a non-contact drill Saturday morning. It is not immediately known how long he will be out . . . The Utes will take today off and resume practice Monday morning.
