Griffin loves reality TV

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Kathy Griffin may be on the D-list, but she's certainly no snob about reality TV shows.

Not just because she'll soon be starring in her own reality show — cleverly titled "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" (which debuts tonight at 8 and 10 p.m. on Bravo). But because, well, she just loves this crud. Especially the shows in which celebrities — or semi-celebrities — are followed around by camera.

"Well, here's the thing. I'm a purist. I love my reality," Griffin said. "I watch all of them. I watched 'The Gastineau Girls.' How many people in this room can say that?

"I watched 'Chasing Farrah' until they chased her and they caught her. . . . Turns out she was just a crazy old drunk." (Ah, Kathy. Always dissing the celebrities.)

"I don't know if you're watching 'Being Bobby Brown' or, as I call it, 'Mr. and Mrs. Crackerson,' " she said. "I mean, who knew they were insane?

"I can't get enough of it. I love it. I sweat watching it."

Not that she likes all reality shows. At least not those that don't seem in the least bit real. "I don't know if you've seen this new David Foster piece-of-(crap) show, but it's so fake. It's totally fake," Griffin said of "Princes of Malibu," the Fox show about the record producer and his obnoxious stepsons. "Did anybody see it? There's this scene where he goes home and he acts like he didn't know his own kids were having this quarter-of-a-million-dollar party. . . . How can you not know that?

"So I like the ones that really feel true. But I love his songs."

She said the thinks "Project Runway" was "a really good show." And "Amazing Race" is a "great show."

"A lot of people are snobby about reality, but I like it," Griffin said.

A STAND-UP COMIC AND actress, Griffin has launched sort of a second career by celebrating her second-tier status as a celebrity. (Thus, the D-list.) And her material leans heavily on celebrities — specifically, making fun of celebrities.

"When I meet all the celebrities and they say, 'Am I on the D-list?' " she said. "I always say, 'You know what? No, Mario Lopez, you're on the A.'

"If you're going to make a Lindsay Lohan joke and you can't talk about her weight loss or running around with Tara Reid . . . what the hell are you going to talk about? Her music? C'mon!"
