From Deseret News archives:
KCPX's former 'Big 13 Team' has get-together
Radio dial
A good example was provided by a reunion earlier this summer of the KCPX (AM-1320) "Big 13 Team."
In attendance were Lynn Lehmann, former morning DJ on "Kay-pix," "Skinny" Johnny Mitchell, evening host; and "Wooly" Waldron, the afternoon-drive voice and program director.
This trio was the "Big 3" of the "Big 13" team.
Also there were Joe Lee, as news anchor, plus DJs John Benson, Dan Jessop (who used the on-air name "Chad O. Stevens"), Terry Pepper and Jordan Mitchell.
Lehmann is perhaps best known for his "Lynn Lehman Lemon Award," which was at its height in the early 1970s. (Lehmann has said he doesn't remember many of the awards 30-plus years later, but I recall my alma mater, Roy High School, receiving the lemon award for not having doors on its restrooms.)
These days, Lehmann is a TV and movie producer. He has worked with Dick Clark on "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction" for Fox TV and Cable, and he has written several books under the pen name of L.R. Lehmann.
Joe Lee is also retired but still does voice work for local radio and TV. Jordan Mitchell works in sales in the Ogden area, Pepper is a retired Sandy police officer, and Jessop is the current afternoon (1-3 p.m.) personality on KBZN ("The Breeze," FM-97.9).
Jerry Bee, Hal Buckner and Jonathan Browne are former KCPX DJs who seem to have disappeared; the reunion group doesn't know what happened to them.
Like Jessop, several others of the old KCPX team are still in Salt Lake radio. Doug Wright is one of the state's best talk-show hosts, airing weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon on KSL (AM-1160), and Michael O'Shea was recently doing nights on KODJ (FM-94.1).
ALL-STAR CAR WASH The first "Matt Thomas Marathon Car Wash" for "Hot Ticket 700" (KALL-AM) is today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the northwest corner of the Gateway parking lot, close to the fountains.
Thomas is the station's afternoon host. He, along with TV and sports celebrities, will be helping the Hot Ticket 700 staff wash cars throughout the day to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah.
There will also be a children's area, food, prizes and music. Jon Wright and Bill Riley, other Hot Ticket personalities, plus Thomas, will broadcast their shows throughout the day from the Gateway.
RADIO HAPPENINGS Kurt Bestor, morning co-host on KUTR (AM-820), climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with his wife earlier this month and called in live updates to the station. The mountain is Africa's tallest.
KSOP radio had an entry in the Bountiful Handcart Days parade last week, but there were no radio-station entrants in the Salt Lake Days of '47 parade. With so many radio stations in Salt Lake City, it's surprising that only KSOP finds a visual presence to be a desirable element in local parades, Among TV stations, only KSL-Ch. 5 entered last week's parades.
