More than 40,000 Utah residents were left without power for more than 30 minutes Wednesday during the heat of the day.

Utah Power spokesman Dave Eskelsen said that at 2:03 p.m. a failed transformer at a Utah Power Cottonwood substation caused power outages in the eastern Salt Lake Valley and the Park City areas. But, Eskelsen said, there was no known cause for the transformer failure.

Power was restored to the Park City area at 2:29 p.m. By 2:45 p.m., the Salt Lake area residents also had power. Eskelsen said that power was restored by moving customers to other circuits.
