Oldest images of Brigham Young are all daguerreotypes

The five oldest-known images of Brigham Young are all daguerreotypes.

An 1846 image of Young in Nauvoo, Ill., (the oldest) is missing, but a paper copy survives.

An 1850 image taken in Salt Lake City and owned by the LDS Church.

An early 1850s image in a private collection.

An early 1850s image taken in Salt Lake City that is now in the Smithsonian Institute's National Portrait Gallery.

An early 1850s image recently obtained by BYU and likely taken the same day as the Smithsonian daguerreotype.
