PITTSBURGH Wandy Rodriguez took Ezequiel Astacio's spot on Houston's roster minutes after Astacio beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, then pitched even better than Astacio as the Astros completed a doubleheader sweep by winning 6-4 Tuesday night.
Lance Berkman, picking up much of Houston's missing offense with Jeff Bagwell on the disabled list, hit a two-run homer in the second game and had four hits in the Astros' first road doubleheader sweep since Aug. 4, 1995 also in Pittsburgh.
Astacio limited Pittsburgh to two runs in six innings for his first major league victory, and Morgan Ensberg keyed the Houston Astros' offense in a 9-3 win over the Pirates in a doubleheader opener Tuesday night.
Ensberg's RBI single followed Lance Berkman's double in the first off Pirates rookie Ian Snell (0-1).
NATIONALS 4, ROCKIES 0: At Washington, John Patterson allowed three hits in eight innings, and fill-in shortstop Jamey Carroll delivered two hits and an RBI to lead Washington to only its fourth victory in 13 games.
Patterson (4-2), who beat Shawn Chacon (1-6), left to a standing ovation after giving up a leadoff single in the ninth. Chad Cordero finished for his major league-high 33rd save.
Nationals manager Frank Robinson shook up his lineup, sitting slumping shortstop Cristian Guzman and hobbled third baseman Vinny Castilla.
CUBS 7, REDS 3: At Cincinnati, Aramis Ramirez homered twice his third straight game with a homer and drove in five runs for streaking Chicago.
Mark Prior (7-3) gave up seven hits and three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Derrek Lee had three hits, including a two-run double in the fifth off Luke Hudson (1-5).
PHILLIES 5, DODGERS 4 (10): At Philadelphia, Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the Phillies over slumping Los Angeles.
The Dodgers went ahead 4-3 in the top of the 10th on Billy Wagner's bases-loaded walk to Jayson Werth.
Pat Burrell hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the inning off Yhency Brazoban (2-5), his first of the year.
METS 3, PADRES 1 (11): At New York, pinch-hitter Chris Woodward hit a two-run homer with one out in the 11th inning for the Mets.
Woodward homered off Chris Hammond (5-1) after Mike Piazza. It was Woodward's first home run as a pinch-hitter and the second game-ending homer this season for New York.
