Intel Corp., the world's biggest computer-chip maker, said second-quarter profit rose 16 percent after demand for laptops pushed sales to a record for the period.
Net income rose to $2.04 billion, or 33 cents a share, from $1.76 billion, or 27 cents, a year earlier, Intel said. Sales gained 15 percent to $9.23 billion. Profit beat the 32-cent average estimate of 36 analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial.
The company has about 350 workers in Riverton.
Revenue will rise to $9.6 billion to $10.2 billion this quarter, Intel said. That would beat the $9.76 billion average estimate of 31 analysts in a survey by Thomson Financial.
Intel shares rose 48 cents to $28.71 Tuesday in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading and have gained 23 percent this year, making them the second-best performers on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Utah Medical
Salt Lake-based Utah Medical Products Inc. reported net income of $1.9 million, or nearly 45 cents per share, for the quarter ended June 30. That compares with $1.8 million, or more than 38 cents per share, for the year-ago quarter.
Net sales totaled $7 million, up from $6.8 million.
The company develops, manufactures, assembles and markets specialty medical devices.
Utah Medical stock was unchanged Tuesday at $22.20 per share. During the past year, the price has ranged from $16.02 to $27.
Nature's Sunshine
Provo-based Nature's Sunshine Products Inc. reported net income of $4.1 million, or 26 cents per share, for the quarter ended June 30. That compares with $4.8 million, or 31 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter. The company attributed the drop primarily to a large tax credit that was realized in the most recent quarter.
The earnings for the most recent quarter matched the consensus expectation of Wall Street analysts.
Revenue totaled $87 million, up from $80.5 million in the year-ago quarter.
The company manufactures and markets through direct sales herbal products, vitamins and complementary products. It had about 671,000 distributors on June 30, compared with about 613,000 a year ago.
