KABUL — Suspected Taliban gunmen kidnapped and hanged a pro-government tribal leader in southern Afghanistan, an official said Saturday. Also, the U.S. military Saturday released 20 Afghans from detention after they were determined to no longer represent a threat, U.S. military spokeswoman Sgt. Marina Evans said.

ORANJESTAD — Police took a jailed Dutch teenager Saturday to retrace his steps at the beach where he says he last saw an Alabama teenager the morning she disappeared in Aruba.

LONDON — Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will get a coat of arms today to coincide with her 58th birthday. The blue, red, gold and green crest features a boar taken from the crest of her father, Maj. Bruce Shand, and a lion copied from her husband Prince Charles' arms, Charles' office said.

BEIJING — China tried to quell an uproar Saturday over a general's comment that Beijing might use nuclear weapons against the United States in a conflict over Taiwan, saying the statement was his personal opinion.

MALABO — A Russian-made passenger plane carrying 35 people disappeared from radar screens shortly after takeoff Saturday, and military helicopters were searching for the aircraft, officials said.

PORT-AU-PRINCE — A U.S.-backed advisory council that oversees Haiti's interim government recommended Saturday that ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's political party be barred from upcoming elections, accusing the party of encouraging violence.
