In the past few days I have read two articles (in The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret Morning News) in which Murray Mayor Dan Snarr boasts of an "economic boom" that Murray has seen during his tenure.
The boast is hollow. There has been no "boom" not even a "ping." In 1998, after Snarr's first full year as mayor began, Murray had sales tax revenue of approximately $11.15 million. Last year, Murray's sales tax revenue was $11.7 million. Considering the effects of inflation, this would actually be a decrease.
It should be noted, in addition, that rates on utilities and virtually every service Murray provides have been increased during his tenure, and at the same time nearly $25 million in power department reserves have been drained, and bonded debt was increased 13-fold from $3.5 million to over $46 million. These are facts Murray residents should seriously consider in the upcoming elections.
