First, they signed contracts. Then, they went to work, anxious to learn what their first pro practice would hold.

"When I was coming in, I was nervous," Jazz rookie shooting guard C.J. Miles said. "I didn't know what to expect."

For Miles and fellow 2005 draft choice Deron Williams, however, workout No. 1 under Jerry Sloan wasn't nearly as daunting as they might have thought it would be.

A couple sets and plays here, a few drills there and plenty of stretching filled most of a two-hour session.

"He didn't get too fired up," Williams said of Sloan, who is back for his 18th season as the Jazz's head coach. "I'm waiting to see the real Jerry Sloan."

Williams and Miles were on hand for the start of training camp Monday in advance of the Rocky Mountain Revue, a six-team summer league for NBA rookies, free agents and youngsters that begins Friday at Salt Lake Community College.

Before they could practice, however, paperwork called.

University of Illinois point guard Williams signed a slotted-salary pact for the draft's first-round No. 3 overall pick that is thought to be worth approximately $7 million over two guaranteed seasons, with the Jazz holding team options on season Nos. 3 and 4.

Miles' second-round salary is thought to be about $850,000 for two seasons, with the Jazz guaranteeing his pay in exchange for Miles opting against playing next season at the University of Texas.

"Once we discussed a guaranteed contract," the Dallas Skyline High School product said, "then there was no reason for me not to come."

During a brief period of uncertainty as to what he'd do, however, times were rather stressful for Miles.

"I don't think I slept for three days," he said.

Walsh (Ohio) University big man Robert Whaley, the Jazz's second second-round pick in last month's draft, also is in Revue camp. He, however, will not negotiate a contract for the future until after the summer league concludes.

NO-SHOW: The Jazz opened Revue camp with 16 players, one fewer than expected. Ex-University of Kentucky and University of Louisville center Marvin Stone was an unexplained no-show.

POLO: According to the Denver Post, the "Nuggets' latest candidate for their vacant guard position appears to be the Los Angeles Clippers' Marko Jaric," and agent Bill Duffy is guessing that the restricted free agent "could have a deal in place within the week."
