The Latin name for this lovely flower is Hemerocallis, which means "beauty for a day." This refers to the fact that each flower lasts only one day. To make up for this, there are many flower buds on each daylily flower stalk, and many stalks in each clump of plants, so the flowering period of a clump is usually several weeks.
The Utah Hemerocallis Society invites you to attend its annual show and sale Saturday at the Sugarhouse Park Garden Center, 1602 E. 2100 South, where you can visit with local daylily experts. Judging will be from 10 a.m.-noon. Public show and plant sale will be from noon-4 p.m.
For additional information on buying and growing these flowers, contact the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS) at www.daylilies.org/daylilies.html.
