Unfortunately, the argument that flags are personal property, and therefore, we can do what we want with them, doesn't work. There are a lot of things the law prohibits me from doing with my personal property. I can't burn my garbage in a 50-gallon drum in my back yard. I can't fill my front yard with junk cars. I can't even put household garbage in my green waste container!
The real argument is: Dare we prevent Americans (or others) from destroying the symbol of their freedom to express themselves by that very destruction? The point is, though you burn a piece of striped fabric, you can never really destroy the freedoms represented therein. The Star-Spangled Banner will forever wave o'er this land of the free, this home of the brave.
