But Hannity insisted his reasons for pulling out of the appearance were because of the producer's decisions to exclude North — one of Hannity's closest friends and a fellow political commentator — and the "Hollywood connection to it this year."

Hannity said if the new producers "didn't exclude people" and went back to the themes of the past two years, he would "love to be a part" of what he called two of the greatest events he's ever been in.

Besides, he said, he didn't say anything that was politically charged.

"There was nothing political about it," he said. "This was above politics. This was about honoring brave men and women who were serving their country."

Despite some negative feedback, Pelo said there were many who appreciated Hannity's presence and addition to the show.

"He was here to honor the troops who we were broadcasting to and to celebrate our freedom," Pelo said. "I think he got a bum rap for doing a good job. I'm not ashamed of the fact that we invited Sean to be part of this show. I realize that not everyone agrees with him, (but) when he was here doing what we asked him to do, he did it with the right intent like a true professional."
