PROVO An Orem man accused of shooting a police officer during a fight at his home on Tuesday has been ruled competent to stand trial.
David Luis Burns, 20, is charged in 4th District Court with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and two other first-degree felonies of disarming a police officer.
On April 17, officers responded to a domestic-violence call from Burns' home and ended up wrestling the man to the ground. During the struggle, Burns allegedly wrestled away guns from the police and fired shots from two different officers' guns.
Police say one of the bullets struck Orem Police Lt. Phil Murphy in the back. Murphy recovered and is now back at work.
