EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Wells just missed a Major League Soccer record with 14 saves and got his fourth career shutout in a 0-0 tie with D.C. United on Sunday night.

Wells, starting this season in place of the injured Jonny Walker, had two key saves late in the game for the MetroStars (4-3-5).

The league record is 15, set by Tony Meola with the MetroStars in a 2-1 loss to D.C. United in 1997.

Nick Rimando was rarely tested in his fourth shutout of the season for United (3-4-4).

FIRE 2, FC DALLAS 0: At Chicago, Nate Jaqua and Lubos Reiter each scored to lift the Fire, who have won four of their last five matches.

Jaqua scored in the 20th minute, picking up a rebound off defender Clarence Goodson and firing the ball past keeper Scott Garlick. Reiter added a goal in the 91st minute for Chicago (7-5-1).

FC Dallas (7-2-3) had its four-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in seven games. The team had 33 fouls and couldn't score on keeper Zach Thornton.

CHIVAS USA 1, EARTHQUAKES 1: At Carson, Calif., Ezra Hendrickson scored in the 66th minute to give Chivas USA (1-9-3) its first point for new coach Hans Westerhof, who was officially announced as interim coach Javier Ledesma's replacement on June 3.

Alejandro Moreno scored for San Jose (3-3-6) in the 45th minute.
