THE OLD LYRIC REPERTORY COMPANY, based in Logan's historic Caine Lyric Theatre, 28 W. Center, opens with an equally historic, classic farce "You Can't Take It With You," directed by OLRC founder Vosco Call and written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy will be joined during the next few weeks by "The Fantasticks," "Arsenic and Old Lace" and Tennessee Williams' sizzling drama "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," with all four shows alternating in repertory through Aug. 6.
As in previous years, the schedule allows patrons to catch all four productions on successive Saturdays, June 25-Aug. 6 (either matinees or evenings), or on successive evenings, July 19-Aug. 6.
Two visiting guest artists this season include Glenn Shadix ("Beetlejuice" and "Planet of the Apes") and Bart Williams ("Bye Bye Birdie," "Hello, Dolly" and "An Enemy of the People"). Shadix will play Mr. Kirby, and Williams will play Grandpa Vanderhof in "You Can't Take It With You."
Other newcomers to the Old Lyric include Corey Ewan as Paul Sycamore, Hollie Campbell as Essie, Autumn Sargent as Rheba, Megan Walker as Alice, Dan Merket as Boris, Katie Ackerman as Gay Wellington and Leecia Bloss as Mrs. Kirby, with OLRC veterans Lee Dailey as Mr. De Pinna and Keri Hostetler as Penelope Sycamore.
Performances will be Thursday-Saturday this week, then on June 30, July 2, 20 and 29 and Aug. 6, evenings at 8 p.m. and Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 (evenings) and $13 (matinees) for adults, $15 and $10 for senior citizens and Utah State University faculty/staff, and $12 and $8 for USU students and all youths under 18 (435-797-1500). For group rates, call 797-1500.
New this year are box offices at both the Caine Lyric and around the corner at the Ellen Eccles Theatre, 43 S. Main. (435-752-0026, Ext. 14). For details, check the Web site, www.usu.edu/lyric.
THE UTAH MUSICAL THEATRE series in Ogden will have two main-stage productions playing in repertory, "Kiss Me, Kate" and "Side by Side by Sondheim," in Peery's Egyptian Theater, followed by an eight-performance run of the national premiere of "Wicked City Blues," a musical film-noir send-up, in Weber State University's Browning Center.
This season also marks a return (partially) to repertory presentations for UMT, following a few seasons playing shows in summer-stock fashion (running one show for a couple of weeks, then another, instead of rotating them).
