FORT DOUGLAS The 229th birthday of the U.S. Army will be celebrated Saturday during the fort's annual Army Day.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a Civil War encampment, military band concerts, a Civil War cannon demonstration, a restored military vehicles display and a small arms display.
At 11 a.m., Art Gogan will give a lecture on the Battle of Bear River. At noon, a ceremony will celebrate the birthday of the Army. At 1 p.m., John Reed will give a lecture on the Battle for Okinawa, the last big battle of World War II.
At 2 p.m., Dr. Charles Hibbard will give a guided tour of historic Fort Douglas. Hibbard also will present a slide show on the Overland Trail during the annual dinner of the Fort Douglas Museum Association. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the cost is $20 per person.
Army Day is sponsored by the Fort Douglas Military Museum and the 96th Regional Readiness Command. The Military Museum is at 32 Potter Street.
