The Highway Jurisdictional Transfer Task Force is to hold eight public meetings by November. The first was Tuesday.

The task force was created as a result of SB25, passed by the 2005 Legislature. Sen. Carlene Walker, R-Cottonwood Heights, was the bill's sponsor.

The task force has three goals:

  • Determine which state roads should be transferred to local control and vice versa.

  • Determine the amount of money or resources to be transferred with the roads.

  • Determine how to phase the transfers.

Members of the task force include seven lawmakers. Four are state representatives and three are state senators. Six local government officials are serving on the task force, in addition to Utah Department of Transportation executive director John Njord.
