West High is sky-high over its academic and athletic achievements.
Forty-four students were honored May 26 at the school's awards assembly in categories such as debate/forensics, Special Olympics, leadership and high standards, dedication and enthusiasm.
A scholarship and commemorative plaque were also given to Oscar Gomez in the name of West 2003 alumnus Ryan Howard, who is an Air Force security team member stationed at Nebraska's Auckland Air Force Base. Howard, a native of Centerville, tutored baseball teammate Gomez when he was a sophomore two years ago.
"That's why (Gomez) is such a good defender this year," said Howard's father, Rob, prior to the ceremony.
West athletic director Marce Wilson said Ryan Howard "came in (to his senior season) with more heart, even though he had a bad heart. He made a great sacrifice at a young age."
Howard was diagnosed with holes in his atrium, but surgery was successful and he fulfilled his goal of joining the Air Force. Gomez said Ryan Howard called him before the event to offer congratulations.
"He thanked me for being a great friend," said Gomez.
The pair were close and enjoyed each other's company, he said. Rob Howard remembered when Gomez transferred from a Los Angeles school to West in 2002.
"My dad said there was too much trouble with gangs and encouraged him to relocate," Gomez said.
Now, he causes trouble for opposing offenses with strong defense. Wilson noted the motto, "Strike first, strike fast, strike hard" was emblazoned on Gomez's plaque.
It's West's long-term tradition to champion efforts of honor and character in both academic and athletic achievement.
Cory Merrell was honored as the male athlete of the year, while Kaylene Finau was named top female athlete. She was also praised for her leadership on the girls volleyball team.
Merrell, who won his team's award, "excels in the classroom and is the epitome of an athlete," according to boys basketball coach Bob Lyman.
Mike Daniels was given the debate/forensics Most Valuable Player award, while the Special Olympics citation went to Jeremy Bruner. Walt Mehr made the latter presentation, saying it exemplified the "we instead of me" attitude, which is "the heart and soul of athletics."
