PROVO — A 3-year-old boy was in critical condition at Primary Children's Medical Center late Sunday after Provo police officers rescued him from the Provo River.

The boy was throwing rocks into the river with other children during a family outing at Exchange Park when he lost his balance and fell in. A woman who saw the child fall alerted the family, and officers responded just after 4 p.m., according to a press release from the Provo Police Department.

Officer Brad Macfarlane spotted the child floating in the swift river, and Officer Mike Bastian jumped in and grabbed the lifeless child. Macfarlane and a citizen helped pull Bastian and the child from the water, according to the release.

Once out of the river, the officers performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived and took over. The boy was life-flighted to the children's hospital and was listed in critical condition.
