S.L. Classic 10K run: Wilson wins again
For the second year in a row, Wilson won the Salt Lake City Classic 10K race and then placed second in the 5K race just a half-hour later.
"I don't even stretch before races," he said. "I don't say that to brag, but that's just the way I am."
Wilson, who is the track coach at Weber High School, finished the 10K with a time of 32:59 and the 5K in 15:56.
Corbin Talley and Nick Harmer, who finished second and third, respectively, in the 10K race, were college teammates of Wilson at Weber State University and were each sponsored by the Salt Lake Running Co.
"We're teammates, friends and training partners," Wilson said.
Wilson said they run 10 to 12 miles a day and have competed in two marathons and two half-marathons in the past few months.
The 5K race was won by Trevor Ball, who is a runner for Utah State University. Ball was the clear winner, finishing nearly a full minute ahead of Wilson with a time of 14:58.
"It's a good way of finishing the season and maximizing fitness," he said.
While Ball and Wilson took the 5K race very seriously, many others had fun with it. Some runners wore super-hero costumes while others simply enjoyed a nice jog through downtown Salt Lake, including Mayor Rocky Anderson.
The top female finishers were Emily Jameson of Taylorsville in the 10K race with a time of 36:04 and Danielle Menlove of Sandy in the 5K race with a time of 18:48.
The 10K wheelchair race was won by Vance Anderson of Ogden with a time of 35:28. Anderson said he thought the course was a little different this year.
"It was harder this year than last year," he said, but later admitted that it was probably due to the fact that he was one year older this year.
Anderson said he recently raced in the Salt Lake marathon and Ogden marathon, where he set a course record. Only three wheelchair participants raced in this year's marathon.
