A 14-year-old boy participating in a re-enactment trip of the Mormon pioneers' trek into Utah had to be treated for severe dehydration Saturday.

Salt Lake City fire crews and paramedics were called to This Is the Place Heritage Park just before 1 p.m. after the teen collapsed while either pushing or pulling a handcart, said Salt Lake City Assistant Battalion Chief Dennis McKone.

The boy was about two miles up Emigration Canyon in a very steep area, he said. It took rescue crews about an hour to reach him and carry him down.

He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
