The Rotary Club of Salt Lake presented 19 high school students with college scholarships this month. Students were selected based on civic and compassionate service, financial need, knowledge of Rotary and accomplishment in academics.
The recipients of the Rotary Youth Scholarships span six Utah schools, come from diverse backgrounds and all share the common goal of furthering their education. The goal of the Rotary Club scholarship program is to help students reach their post-secondary education goals.
Winners of the $2,000 scholarships include Carla Martina Suarez from East High School, Talmage Wood from Highland, Raquel Lopez from Horizonte Training Center, Lillian Rodriquez from Judge Memorial, Callie Williams from Rowland Hall St. Marks and Katy Yun Zhoa from West.
Students awarded $1,000 scholarships were Onel Martinez from East High, Corrie Haven from Highland, Andres Velez-Tuero from Horizonte, Marco Elegante from Judge Memorial, Brooks Puchner from Rowland Hall and Yevy Kopeleva from West.
Those with $500 scholarships include Linda Rico, from East High, Jenny Frodsham from Highland, Andrianna Ayon from Horizonte, Kate Owen from Judge Memorial and Dallas Shi from West High.
Travis Schlegel and Isha Gupta from Rowland Hall both received $250 scholarships.
The Rotary Club is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries. Catherine Conner, a Highland High student, has been awarded an AFS Awards for Excellence scholarship, a distinction shared by only 118 students nationwide. The scholarship reflects leadership skills, academic excellence and service to the community.
Air Force Airman Bobbie J. Ohm has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base. He is a 2004 graduate of East High School.
Army Spec. Heather L. Mowers is a member of the 48th Brigade Combat Team that recently participated in one of the most realistic scenarios offered by the U.S. Army at the National Training Center in Fort Irvin, Calif. She is the sister of Nikki Waterbury of Salt Lake City.
