Salt Lake County Councilman Joe Hatch says the reason Dolan was able to shift political sentiment in favor of a Sandy stadium was because he has a good relationship with local politicians and his Salt Lake City counterpart does not.

Faced with already poor local relationships, some City Council members say now is not the time to become even more island-like.

"If we spend all our time on the national issues and focus all our time expanding our connections on national groups, we do that at the expense of our relations with local groups," Councilman Eric Jergensen said. "We are not an island."

Tuesday, ULCT director Ken Bullock gave a presentation to the City Council showing how the league benefits cities and why Salt Lake City's dues, which are based on population and revenues, are so much higher than other cities' dues.

The council is expected to decide whether to continue the city's participation in the league next month. Several council members have expressed concern that Salt Lake City's dues are twice as much as Utah's second largest city.
