BASEBALL: At Greeley, Colo., the New York Institute of Technology racked up 13 runs on 18 hits as the Bears dominated Utah Valley State 13-2 in the opening game of the Division-I Independent Invitational on Friday. NYIT began its defense of the invitational championship by scoring in seven of the nine innings, including four each in the fourth and fifth to cruise to the victory.
NYIT starter Michael Striker was one pitch from a complete-game shutout when Scott Croshaw doubled to left and on the next pitch, Kory Drew hit his seventh home run of the year.
Utah Valley State will take on host Northern Colorado today at 2:30 p.m. in a game that can be heard live on wolverinesports.net.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach Joe Cravens announced the signing of Nick Covington, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior, to a letter of intent to play basketball for the Wildcats in 2005-06. Covington comes from Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis, Tenn., where he averaged 7.3 points and 3.5 assists on a team that averaged 97.3 points per game.

BASEBALL: Southern Utah's baseball team closed the 2005 regular season Friday with a doubleheader split of the final two games of a four-game series vs. Mid-Continent Conference foe Western Illinois at Thunderbird Park. SUU tallied nine-unanswered runs to rally and take the opener, 9-2, while the Leathernecks salvaged the final game of the series by a 10-3 count in seven innings. The victory in the finale for Western (24-32, 14-10) assured it of the second seed in next weekend's Mid-Con tournament, while the Thunderbirds (25-26, 12-10) are currently alone in third place in the conference standings.

GYMNASTICS: Future Utah State gymnasts Nikki Felley, Devin Markle and Brittany Price all placed in the top 50 in the all-around out of 250 participants at the Junior Olympic Championships last weekend. All three will be freshman for the Aggies next season.
