Festival offers food from all over the world

Every year, the Living Traditions Festival offers Utahns a taste of food from all over the globe. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the festival takes place this weekend at the Salt Lake City & County Building, 450 S. 200 East.

Vendors from 20 different cultural groups will be selling food at this year's event. While there will be lots of music, dancing, and arts and crafts, food is also a big focus. Admission is free, but food items are priced individually. You can mix and match your meal from a variety of cuisines. Here's a sampling of what you'll find:

Austrian: Gulash mit brot (beef stew with bread), Linzer torte (pastry with nuts and raspberry jam), apple strudel, sacher torte (chocolate cake).

Basque: Chorizos (mildly seasoned pork sausage in a bun), steak sandwich (batter-fried steak with pimentos), churros.

Bosnian: Cevapi (beef sausages with bread and tomatoes), Pljeskavica (Bosnian-style cheeseburger with onion), shish kebab (beef served with green salad and bread), tiramisu (cake layered with cream and flavorings).

Chinese: Sweet and sour chicken, vegetable chow mein, egg rolls, fried rice, dessert won tons.

Greek: Gyros (thin-sliced grilled lamb on pita bread with onions, tomatoes and yogurt), baklava.

Hawaiian: Teriyaki burgers, fried saimen (a noodle dish), shaved ice.

Italian: Meatball sandwich with marinara sauce, Italian cookies and sodas.

Lebanese: Hummus sandwich (ground and seasoned chick peas served on pita bread), falafel sandwich (ground, seasoned and deep-fried chick peas with lettuce on pita bread).

Mexican: Chili verde burritos, carne asadas tacos (beef baked with onions and parsley), pork and chicken tamales, refried beans, rice, Jarritos (Mexican soft drink).

Native American: Indian tacos (fry bread topped with beans, cheese and tomatoes).

Pakistani: Samosas (egg roll with ground beef and vegetables), chicken potato curry, vegetable curry, chicken or beef kababs, daal (mildly spiced beans), basmati rice, roti (crisp Pakistani bread), lemonade.

Peruvian: Arroz con pollo (chicken and rice), Papa a la Huancaina (Andean-style potatoes in cream sauce), platano fritos (deep fried plantains), Inca Kola (Peruvian soda).
