3 colleges shorten summer work week

Dixie State College, the College of Eastern Utah and Salt Lake Community College are again switching to a four-day work week for the summer.

It's a move that in 2003 saved Dixie $40,000 and SLCC about $118,000.

Administrators at all three colleges implemented the now yearly cost-saving measure when the Utah Legislature was unable to fund rising fuel and power prices. School officials were forced to reallocate funds from other budgets and to look for ways to save money.

In a press release announcing the switch, Dixie President Robert Huddleston explained other reasons for a shorter work week. "We've also done it to give our employees an extra day with their families in appreciation for the extra burden our employees have shouldered during these lean budget years," he said.
