Mapleton water clear of bacteria

MAPLETON — Residents in the southwest section of town were able to stop boiling their culinary water Tuesday when city officials received an all-clear notice.

Officials imposed the boil order Saturday when E. coli bacteria was found in one source of the city's spring-fed water supply. That source, a mountain spring that apparently picked up the bacteria from spring runoff, was cut off from feeding into a city water system that supplied about 300 of Mapleton's 1,700 homes, City Manager Bob Bradshaw said.

Police and fire officials and volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were sent door-to-door to notify residents after water tests received at 10:45 a.m. showed that the water was clear of the bacteria, he said. A flier given to residents said the city has not been able to identify why the water was contaminated and that the latest tests of the spring water shows show no E. coli present. The remainder of the city's water supply was not affected, Mayor Dean Allan said.
