Question: During the campaign, the mayor talked during a debate about possibly changing leash laws in dog parks in the county. There have also been reports about People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals seeking a countywide ordinance banning or restricting dog chaining. Have there been any changes in pet-related ordinances since the new administration took office or are there any changes being discussed?
Response: Currently, Salt Lake County allows dogs in parks if they're on-leash. The Parks & Recreation Division has identified about a half-dozen parks that could be used, at least in part, as off-leash dog parks.
However, before that can be done, there must be a full public process to change the master plan, get input from neighbors and park users. I am told this process could be under way by the end of this year.
As for PETA and a ban or restrictions on dog chaining, we have gotten no information from PETA regarding a request to change the current county ordinance that allows canines to be chained on their owners' property.
