Fourteen Davis County high school students have received scholarships from the Sons of Utah Pioneers. Salt Lake County students also received scholarships at the organization's annual scholarship awards program.
Leanne Clark, Layton High School, won a $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarship, and Carly Gerrard and Megan Lynne Williams, both Davis High School, won $1,000 John Morgan Youth Scholarships.
The following students from Davis High School won $500 Sons of Utah Pioneers Scholarships: Misha Ayn Johnson, Marianne Meyer, Tania Nersisian, Heather Parker, William Robert Passey, McKenzie Sanders and Lindsey Tew.
The following students from Layton High School also won $500 scholarships: Alanna C. Boutwell, Heidie Dowdle, Rachel Jenkins, and Danielle Olney.
The SUP annually gives between 50 and 100 scholarships to deserving high school graduates, said Kent Lott. "We do not target grade-point averages as the primary factor but instead look for students who have succeeded in overcoming significant obstacles in life and gone on to excel in school. In doing this we are looking for and rewarding modern day 'pioneers.' "
