In Colorado Thursday the mayor focused on what Salt Lake City has done to curb emissions — like buying wind power, using energy-saving light bulbs and converting some city-owned vehicles to natural gas — but at the Sundance Summit "the mayor really doesn't want it to be just about what Salt Lake City has done," Romney said.

Instead, a number of experts will offer presentations on what climate change is, what local municipalities can do to help curb the problem and how cities can market and communicate environmentally friendly messages to their constituents, Romney said.

Steve Berkholder, mayor of the Denver suburb of Lakewood, Colo., is one who has been invited to attend.

"I'm certainly interested in the whole issue of the future of energy in this country," he said. "I try to go to all the events that I can where I can learn more about what we can do better."

Anderson has become a much sought-after expert on what local governments can do to help curb global warming. He's been asked to present at United Nations-backed environmental meetings in India and Argentina and has also been invited to participate in United Nations-backed World Environment Day activities in San Francisco June 1-5.
