KUTR (AM-820), Utah's newest radio station, is hoping to go on the air in early May as the state's first and only radio station geared exclusively to women.
The lineup of personalities for AM-820 is guaranteed to surprise just about anyone. There's not a name in the new station's lineup that I would have expected to see. Most of the programming is local, with a few syndicated shows mixed in.
The new station a sister station of KSL-AM and a Bonneville International property has Utah-based composer and musical performer Kurt Bestor as a weekdays, 6-9 a.m. morning co-host.
Paired with Rebecca Cressman, a former KBYU TV and radio host with 15 years' experience, they combine to host the "Wakin' Up With Rebecca and Kurt" show.
KUTR also has an intriguing afternoon talk show, "Ask a Woman," weekdays, noon-3 p.m. It will be hosted by three women on a rotating basis: Enid Greene, former U.S. congresswoman from Utah; Connie Sokol, author and TV/radio host; and Holly Mullen, columnist for The Salt Lake Tribune.
The "Dr. Liz Hale Show" will be weekdays from 9 a.m.-noon. After working as a clinical psychologist in Seattle, she moved to Salt Lake City and has developed and managed an eating disorders clinic for LDS Family Services.
"The Rabbi Schmuley Boteach Show" airs each weekday from 3-6 p.m. This is a live program for KUTR only.
Other programs on the station's lineup include:
"The Bob and Sheri Show" (weekdays 4-6 a.m.); "The Clark Howard Show," (weekdays, 6-9 p.m.); "The Dr. Joy Browne Show," (weekdays, 9 p.m.-midnight); "Home and Shopping Show With Marie Ricks" (Saturdays, 10 a.m.-noon); "Cultural Connections With Joanne Milner" (Saturdays, noon-1 p.m.); "It's All About Life With Danielle Lin" (Saturdays, 1-3 p.m.); "Satellite Sisters" with Julie, Liz, Monica and Lian Dolan (Saturdays, 3-6 p.m.; "The Family Tech Show" with Maxwell, Victoria and Jennifer Smart (Saturdays, 6-9 p.m.); "Midnight Mom Talk Radio With Maria Bailey" (Saturdays, 11 p.m.-midnight); and "The Clark Howard Show" (weekdays, midnight-4 a.m.)
The Sunday lineup includes: "Time Out for Women" (6-8 a.m.); "A Song to Sing With Hilary Weeks" (8-10 a.m.); "People of Faith With Carole Mikita" (10-11 a.m.); "Satellite Sisters" (11 a.m.-2 p.m.); "A Song to Sing With Hilary Weeks" (2-4 p.m.); "Relatively Speaking With Irene Johnson" (4-6 p.m.); "Healthy Living With Dr. Ken Cooper" (6-8 p.m.); "Travel Today With Peter Greenberg" (8-10 p.m.); and "It's All About Life With Danielle Lin" (10 p.m.-midnight).
"It's been a tremendous team effort to bring this station together for the women of Utah," said Chris Redgrave, vice president and station manager for AM-820. "Our goal is to provide a place for women to listen, reflect, respond and react all in a conversational environment."
Will the station be a hit with women? Probably only if they tune into the AM dial, a place many people don't usually go.
KUTR also has a high number of personalities that are new to radio. In addition, the station has several open program slots it is still finalizing.
Federal Communications Commission approval is the final hurdle before the station can go on the air.More KUTR information is available at www.kutr820.com.
RADIO HAPPENINGS A billboard and a related Web site (www.uglykids.info) has caused a stir in the Salt Lake area. Rumors are it may be a radio stunt. Could the three kids in the photograph be three local DJs, like the "Z-Morning Zoo" on KZHT? Whatever this thing is, it will kick off on May 20.
KUDD (FM-107.9) has a new Web site at www.1079themix.com.
KBYU (FM-89.1) will air a six-part series on Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, said to be the most recorded singer of all time, Thursdays at 9 p.m., starting May 5 and going through June 9.KSFI ("FM-100") has a "Sound of Your Name Secret Contest" under way. Participants enter through the station's Web site at www.fm100.com for a chance to win $1,000. Can one station sabotage another station's contest? The "Radio from Hell" show on KXRK encouraged listeners this week to enter false, silly names into the KSFI contest.
