KAYSVILLE He's been "flirting" with it for several weeks, but on Saturday at the 48th annual Davis High Track and Field Invitational, Viewmont's Trevor Heiner finally broke the state high school record in the high jump.
Heiner's 6-11 effort eclipsed the old mark of 6-10.5 that he held. With three weeks left in the prep season, and with the right conditions, he might have a chance to break the magical 7-foot mark.
"That'd be something," he said after easily winning the Davis title. Heiner also won the long jump as the clouds gathered and a soft rain fell on the Kaysville track late Saturday afternoon. His effort easily won the Outstanding Performance award.
Another great performance came from Davis High's Josh Adams, who completed the always-difficult distance double by winning both the 1600 and 3200 meters. His battle in the 3200 with Viewmont's talented Brian McKenna may have been a precursor of what's to come in next month's state 5A meet. Davis and Viewmont are expected to be the favorites, and either team could win the title. On Saturday, Adams held off McKenna to win the 3200 by about eight seconds.
"We always have good races when we're running together," Adams said of his friend from Viewmont. "I think we like battling each other."
Team scores are not kept at the Davis Invite, which is the state's longest-running invitational, and awards watches to the event winners. Heiner and Adams were the only double winners in the boys' "invited" division, for the athletes with the highest rankings.
Alta's Sarah Butler had the most outstanding performance of the day, a 143-5 effort in the javelin. She has dominated the event again this season. Davis' Ashlee Cannon won the Outstanding Athlete award with four wins-including two meet records. She won the invited 100- and 300-hurdle races, setting a new mark of 44.94 in the latter race when she was challenged right to the end by Ally Dean of Bonneville (who finished at 45.06). Cannon also won the open 200 and anchored the winning 400 relay team.
Taylorsville's Shawnee Slade continued another phenomenal season with wins in the 100, 200 and long jump. Alta had wins from Mary Staples in the 1600 and Bree Kidd in the 800.
