Revolution holds off D.C. United

WASHINGTON — Clint Dempsey scored the winning goal in the 77th minute and the New England Revolution held off D.C. United for a 4-3 victory Saturday night.

After scoring from 6 yards out, Dempsey mimicked hitting a baseball out of RFK Stadium, the new home of the Washington Nationals, to celebrate his first goal of the season.

D.C. United (1-2-1) missed two scoring chances in the final minute when midfielder Clyde Simms soared shots just over the goal.

New England (2-0-1) took a 3-0 lead during a 6-minute span. Taylor Twellman scored from 7 yards out in the 26th minute, Shalrie Joseph added a penalty kick in the 28th minute and Marshall Leonard scored a goal 4 minutes later.

RAPIDS 2, CREW 0: At Denver, Pablo Mastroeni scored in the second minute, helping the Colorado Rapids to a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.

The victory was the Rapids' first in four games (1-2-1) this season.

Luchi Gonzalez had a goal and an assist, adding an insurance score the 57th minute. Chris Henderson finished with two assists.

Joe Cannon had one save and the shutout for Colorado.

The Crew played the final minutes without Mario Rodriguez, who was issued a red card in the 75th minute.
