And later, to accompany some footage of salt crystals, viewers hear his voice again, "The crystal will actually wind itself into a spiral during growth. . . ."

For some who came to Utah to see Spiral Jetty, the most touching part of the film came near the end, as a thin man in a white shirt goes running along the jetty. "Is that Bob?" one of the journalists whispered. Holt said it was. "Will we be able to run on it?" someone asked. But of course the earthen path is gone.

Rothschild said, "We can't run. We might be able to stumble along."

The man on the film trotted around the spirals and the camera followed him, until, at last, he came to the very center and stood looking out at the water. The wind blew his thick dark hair. The viewer couldn't see his face, but from the back, at least, he seemed quite young.
