Viewmont and Davis won titles at Saturday's Taylorsville High Track and Field Invitational, while Roy and Grantsville took home trophies at the Juan Diego Invite.

At Taylorsville, Viewmont senior Trevor Heiner just missed the state record in the high jump, an event he won at 6-9. He failed at 6-11, his last effort just grazing the bar. Still Heiner's win in that event and in the long jump propelled the Vikings to a victory over Davis. Boys individual and team results were not available at press time due to a computer problem at the school. Those results should be available for publication on Monday. Taylorsville coach Brad Molen said Heiner was awarded the meet's boys' MVP award.

It was senior Shawnee Slade of Taylorsville that won the girls' MVP title, with her victories in the 100, 200 and long jump. Slade just missed a fourth win-by one one-thousandth of a second, when the Warriors were edged by Davis in the 400 meter relay.

"It's tough not to call that race a dead heat, but we had the committee review videos several times," Molen said. Davis won the girls' team title, with Taylorsville second.

Top performances in addition to Slade's were turned in by Lone Peak's Chelsey Kaplar in the 100 hurdles, a winning time of 15.65; Heidi Houle of Mountain View in the 400 (55.49), Davis' Ashley Cannon with a 45.02 clocking in the 300 hurdles, and Fremont's Cassie Reeves, who won the 1600 in 5:10.69. Katie Bowen of Lone Peak captured her specialty, the 3200, in 11:24.10. Top field performances came from Sarah Butler of Alta with a 130-2 throw in the javelin; and Taylorville's Mele Tangulu with a 38-3 winning mark in shot.

In Draper, Roy and Grantsville won team titles in the Juan Diego Invitational, composed mostly of 1A and 2A schools. The Royals bested host Juan Diego by 30 points in boys, while Grantsville ran up 202.5 points to hold on to first in girls.

Daniel Elgaaen of Roy captured three first places, winning the long jump and 200 and 300 hurdles. Juan Diego's Carlos Valle won the discus and shot, while Chris Carter of Roy took firsts in the 110 hurdles, 400 and 800. Logan's James Drake was also a double winner in the 1600 and 3200.

Multiple winners in girls were Shalene Titmus of Grantsville, with wins in the high jump, 100 and 200; her teammate Brooke Bunderson in the long jump and 400, and Grantsville's Sara Reed in the 800 and 3200.

Next Saturday's invitationals include the annual Davis High Invite in Kaysville and the Ogden High invitational, the last weekend before BYU hosts its two-day invite April 29 and 30.
